In the first episode of "Midnight, Texas", Manfred gets a plate of welcome to the neighbourhood sand tarts from Fiji. They're also magical cookies, since Fiji is a witch, and if he had any bad intentions toward the town's inhabitants, Manfred would, Fiji tells her friend, "be tossing those cookies".

I'd not heard of sand tarts before and some googling gives some interesting information about the Pennsylvanian Dutch settlers who brought them to America, Amish families, and the Christmas tradition of making them.
Sand tarts are dusted with sugar (I guess giving the "sand" texture), powered sugar, and/or have nuts, pecans or almonds most often, as decorations.

I've wanted to make sand tarts since seeing the episode, being a fan of the show, enjoying occasional new forays into the world of cake/biscuit making, and an eclectic pagan :)
So I looked at several recipes of the many available online and chose this one:
Grandma's Sand Tart Cookies

The problem was that American recipes use cups (why don't you weigh things?! Also why does butter come in sticks?! Why are even your tablespoons bigger than ours?! Why Fahrenheit?!) so I had to do a bit of converting via some websites.
Then I came to make the dough and…I'm not feeding an entire village! So I halved the mixture and I probably should have rolled a bit thinner (I had to increase the cooking time) and still got 40 cookies. For comparison I tend to make about 15-20 biscuits/cookies from a UK recipe.
They are much approved of by the family though so a few more were welcome, and I might make them again :)

I made rounds, stars, a couple of reindeers, and a few Christmas tree shapes.

Oh, my family has made these for decades, but I never knew them by the name “Sand Tarts”! I think we always just called them “Christmas Cookies” since that was the only time of year we ever had them.

Back around the year 2000, when I first began to suspect I might have celiac disease — turned out on later testing that I actually have NCGS — I developed a gluten-free version of the recipe Mom used. It wasn't a straight substitution, since I had to do some experimentation to get the texture and flavor just right and ended up having to make a few adjustments (e.g.: substituting a little canola oil in place of some of the butter and cooking at a slightly higher temperature, etc.). But they came out very well.

Alas, I've since lost the recipe to an over-zealous house guest who had severe OCD and who decided to appease this by — without my permission — going through everything I owned in a fit of “tidying”, and she may have not recognized my recipe notes for what they were so might have thrown them out! 😱 It took me forever and a day to finally find my recipe folder after she was kicked out by my parents, but alas, that and several other hand-written recipes are gone. So if I were to want to make some now, I'd have to start all over again with basic experimentation. 😢

On the other hand, I'm a way better baker than I used to be, so I could probably figure out the ratios and other important adjustments more quickly this time. And some of the memories might come back as I start making a few cookies at a time in small batches.

And yes! I weigh nearly everything! In grams, not ounces. I do, however bake in Fahrenheit, but whenever I enter recipes into google docs, I always put in Celsius conversions in case I ever get around to sharing them with friends online.

We'll let you know how it goes, once we've had a chance to try experimenting again.

They look really nice, and I love the shapes. Very festive :) I haven't baked cookies for a long time and now I wish I had the time to try!

This is so interesting! It was fun to read about the backstory. Are they sweet once you bake them?

Also, LOL about us Americans not weighing things. My husband is American too, but he would much rather bake using weight measurements so he usually looks up the conversions or finds a weight-based recipe.
