I don't know if they're still used much, but these small graphics very much used to be a Thing to say that your journal or community was only (or partly) open to those you'd added to your friends list (LJ) or circle (DW).

I had trouble with these and have more brainstormed that had 7 or more words. Maybe they can be 3 sentence fics in the future! I did eventually manage 10 'fics' with six words for lands_of_magic.

1. He chose me; it was enough.
2. "Matelotage ? Pirate marry you? I do!"
3. One kiss began, and ended it.
4. "Put that down!" "Oops, too late."
5. "I ain't afraid of ...AGH, RUN!"
6. Sometimes even true love isn't enough
7. If only he could've been satisfied.
8. Renewed hope dawned like the sunrise.
9. "Juliet's not dead!" Romeo cried, relieved.
10. Prophecy fulfilled by efforts at prevention.

Some are deliberately generic; some lend themselves to certain fandoms;
#2 Our Flag Means Death but could also be Black Sails or POTC
#5 is a Ghostbusters reference but could be any fandoms with ghosts or supposed ghosts
#7 Alexander Hamilton reference
#9 Alternate ending to "Romeo and Juliet"
#10 Many myths and legends rely on the self-fulfilling prophecy trope.

For Fandom 50 today I'm featuring Mr Sandman.

Written in 1954 the best known versions are by The Chordettes, and the Four Aces, and in 1981 by Emmylou Harris.

Mr Sandman is a folklore figure whose magical sand puts people to sleep and inspires good dreams. (The grit or sleep found in eyes upon waking is supposedly that sand).

Sandy, the Sandman as seen in "Rise of the Guardians"

The song wants him to bring a dream as in a romantic figure, describing the ideal man with features such as lips like roses and wavy hair.

The Chordette's version featured in the films "Uncle Buck" and two of the "Halloween" franchise films.

The Four Aces's version featured in "Back to the Future" playing as Marty realises he's travelled back in time.

However I always think of The Golden Girls. In "Not Another Monday", s5e7, where Blanche, Rose, and Dorothy, sing it to a baby to try and get him to sleep.

One youtube commentator said "Honestly I didn't know the name of the song so I searched bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum." 😂

Challenge #10 Five Things! The five things are totally up to you.

I'm doing 'firsts' as a sort of theme:

1. First movie I watched this year: The Mario Brothers Movie (2023)
The first movie I watched last year: Sing 2016 - Last movie I watched last year: Shazam 2 Fury of the Gods 2023

2. My first fic posted to AO3 last year was Nothing Is Impossible a Deception (TV 2018) post-canon fic.
My last fic posted to AO3 last year was Deck The Halls With Boughs of Holly (Even Geralt Should be Jolly) a crack modern au Witcher fic for lands_of_magic. I haven't yet yet posted to AO3 this year.

3. My most popular, that is my fic that has been bookmarked the most at AO3 is There's No Healing the Wound, a Good Omens hurt/comfort fic.
My most viewed fic of 2023 is Precious Moments a Magnum PI (2018) fluff fic with 641 hits

4. AO3 tells me I posted to the archive last year a total of 74,603 words. The first in terms of length, i.e. the longest of these was A Convenient Warlock a DC's Legends of Tomorrow Weird West AU with Sara Lance/John Constantine for unconventionalcourtship with 16,996 words.
The shortest fic was a double drabble (200 words) Grooming a The Witcher (TV) piece with the summary Hair brushing can be an act of quiet intimacy written for genprompt_bingo

5. This year I sang karaoke for the first time at a church fundraiser. It was a really fun evening with a buffet provided and some group singalongs so everyone could get involved (the closing song of Sweet Caroline raised the roof!) I sang the "Ghostbusters" theme by Ray Parker Jr with my older nephew - this was fun as everyone joined in yelling "Ghostbusters!" and then by myself I sang "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Challenge #9 Rec Us Your Newest Thing

Hmm. A lot of my current stuff is recurring, new seasons of shows I'd already been watching, movies I've seen before/next in franchise, or older shows which are new to me but old hat to others.


I fell in love with the character of Domingo Chavez in the final season of Jack Ryan last year and requested the character for Yuletide and did get matched on it so that was fun :) I couldn't find a gif so instead here's an image; I made this "name" poster for part of a lands_of_magc challenge:

I watched and enjoyed "Fast X" at the weekend, Jason Momoa was a fun villain camping it up in a movie that embraces it's silliness and over-the-top action scenes while retaining the key theme of Family in all the ways the characters understand that.


I was surprised how much I enjoyed the rebooted "Gladiators" which has moved to BBC. Bradley Walsh and his son host and the whole thing is very much leaning into the over to top cheesiness against the adrenaline fuelled backdrop and it's capturing a lot of the nostalgia crowd and younger fans. Might even encourage children to take up more exercise!
