Character profile – Emeri
Emeri's family, minor nobility, have lived near the village for years, providing magical services and paying for a tutor for the children. His mother died bearing a third child, and his father died not long after. He – now in his mid-late thirties, and his slightly older sister, Sabrina, were raised by his elderly aunt and uncle. He tells Bryony that his uncle died of the scourge, the illness he is now dying from. His aunt died a few years afterwards, leaving Emeri and Sabrina alone. As such the siblings have been close.
When Sabrina left a couple of years ago Emeri became withdrawn and has lived in almost complete isolation, save for the family cat, Clawdine. He sent Sabrina letters but received no answer and now he is unable to make the journey to the castle where he believes Sabrina is living.
While not a tall man, he is imposing and always turns heads. A handsome Caucasian with dark brown hair and brown eyes, he wears a tidy beard and his hair to his jawline, usually tied back with a ribbon. Well educated, he is a gentleman, charming but not without passion. He plays the lyre, and is writing a memoir of sorts to record what he's learnt before he dies. He was initially against having Bryony stay with him just as she was reluctant, but he soon finds her help invaluable and is enthusiastic about teaching her once they realise she has magical abilities he can nurture.
[I'm still figuring out all the family backstory but this is what I have so far]

Date: 2015-11-21 09:32 pm (UTC)What does the childhood estate look like? How old was he when his parents passed? Did the children move to where the aunt and uncle live? What kind of schooling did he have? What sorts of clothing does he favour? Does he wear jewelry?
And will you write a quick character sketch starring Emeri?

Date: 2015-11-22 09:49 am (UTC)The estate is, at least from the villager's perspective, spacious. It sits above the village, nestled amongst the three hills for which the village is named. As I said in my 30k update, I'm still working out the interior details, but the castle/mansion/house has a lower floor, upper floor, and a sort of tower to one corner which houses the library as storey-and-a-half. The upstairs has mostly fallen into disrepair of late. The estate has an orchard and lots of other trees and plants, and a herb garden. There's a quiet space with two stone benches near a pond not far the house, where it's pleasant to sit and talk or study.
The siblings have been alone since their late teens/early twenties, I think. Long enough for details to become hazy. The aunt moved to live with them; this is the family 'seat', and it would have been unthinkable to remove the heirs to anywhere else. That said, Emeri is well aware that here they're the big fish in the small pond, but in the wider world they're only minor nobles and don't garner the same level of awe/respect as a given.
Clothing; lots of black, I think. I did some polyvore collages earlier in the month showing some of the clothing styles and interests of the major characters, but Emeri had a lot more 'hobby' items than outright clothing than the female characters! He definitely wears jewellery, in particular a ring I included in the collage. Gems are magical and earth magic is his major focus so the ring has special meaning.
Privately educated at home, then at the sole/best university to study magic alongside more mundane but practical studies. Sabrina received the same level of education.
Actually maybe I know more than I realised, so that was helpful, thank you!
I'm in the midst of the novel obviously but maybe later I can write a character sketch (I'm guessing you mean a ficlet focussing on him showing something about who he is) or share another snippet. The novel is entirely from the female characters' POV so maybe I'd have to write something from his POV for a true sketch :) Maybe something from his university days with Riley. I think that would be fun once I make 50k!

LOL, thanks! Such a pun, Clawdine, and I actually have Bryony say something like, "A pun? I thought better of you," and he's all "Maybe you shouldn't" because he's not as uptight/aloof as she first thought :)
