Summary: during the season one episode "Lunatic" Scott has a panic attack. Stiles helps.

Full summary: Worried about what will happen on the full moon – will he kill all his friends? – Scott becomes overwhelmed during a test and runs out of the room, dropping his bag in the corridor. Stiles follows, retrieving the bag, and finds a shirtless Scott standing in the shower. He gives Scott his inhaler and after using it, Scott calms down. Except it wasn't an asthma attack. But believing it was, and that the medication would help, helped end what Stiles says was a panic attack. He knows what it feels like. He had them after his mother died.
Commentary: (I've just watched season one recently, season two much longer ago, season three not at all, which biases my interpretations accordingly)
Once again, Stiles goes out of his way to help Scott, with little reward. He's always there for Scott but the idea that Scott didn't know Stiles had suffered like that after his mother's death seems it's not necessarily the other way round.
I suppose Stiles could have hidden his grief from Scott, or maybe they weren't friends back then. But we're told they're friends and yet we see a lot of Stiles doing research, Stiles being put in danger, Stiles stepping up for Scott and little of Scott doing anything in particular for Stiles.
Furthermore in season one Stiles, angry with Scott, gets him beaten up - claiming he knew that Scott would heal and it was to help with his training. Which I don't think he knew that for sure. With friends like these…
There's some meta obvious thoughts on stiles and scott's relationship which touches on this lack of knowledge and suggests that "I’ve always thought that he and Stiles have a very guyish, dudebro relationship centered more on the things they do, rather than the things anyone feels."
If I'm to believe Scott really cares about Stiles I'm going to need some evidence. And I'd also like more evidence that Stiles really cares about Scott as a person and that Scott isn't just the only one who will hang out with him. They're both social outcasts at the start of season one, and maybe that's why they became friends, because it's better than being alone. But surely that's not enough? And if it is a "dudebro" relationship, then I hope it matures into something deeper, more real. Because I feel that despite their antagonism, Stiles and Derek have more emotional exchanges than Scott and Stiles. Don't just tell me they're friends. Make me believe it.

Date: 2013-07-06 07:05 pm (UTC)Sidekick yes, but I guess I expect heroes to care about their sidekicks (Buffy/Willow, Mal Reynolds/Zoe, etc). And Scott's inability to see the big picture and make decisions based on the most good for the most people is one of the things that most bugs me about him. He's naive and inexperienced as a wolf and a leader, but he refuses to take advice from smarter and/or more experienced people around him. So I'm lukewarm on Scott myself. But I'm sure I'll find plenty of enjoy when season three airs :D

Date: 2013-07-08 03:13 pm (UTC)I don't entirely agree about Scott and Stiles, though. Their friendship may not be perfect, but that's good since it is the main focus of the show. Scott is the main character, and Stiles is the viewpoint character. On LotS, it's actually Richard who's the viewpoint character and Kahlan who's the main character, because it's really her story. We the viewers can't know what it's like to be a werewolf or a Confessor, but we can imagine what it's like knowing one. Or something ;)

Date: 2013-07-08 06:32 pm (UTC)I think the main focus of the show is very like the new!Seeker/Confessor relationship but here it's new!werewolf/new!hunter and it's very much about "I am the One True Pack Leader!"
I'd say that Scott is our POV for wolves and Allison our POV for hunters and the town in general since she's the new girl in season one. I think Stiles is our Xander, the normal kid, but with Willow's computer skills (I associate Lydia more with Willow - there may be another picspam at some point!)
I just feel that Richard genuinely cares about, say, Zedd, whereas Scott seems more "Stiles is in trouble? Yeah, I'll go help in a minute. Or Derek will take of it." But he'd drop everything for Allison (because romance always trumps other relationships) IDK. I'm hoping for some serious character growth all round in season three :D
