The square was empty, with most people now sitting down to their evening meal. Honor headed for the centre and the fountain, lifting one hand to shield his eyes from the setting sun.
He knelt at the base of the fountain, his long coat settling into the dust. The figure atop the water feature was not the Lady but in some ways, all goddesses were aspects of Her, and in lieu of a dedicated temple, he wasn't inclined to be fussy. He pressed one knuckle to the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes.
My Lady, Honor prayed silently, You who are the light and the dark. You are in the summer breeze and the winter snow. You are a sword and its sheath. You are both warrior and healer. You are within the world and also without. Blessed Mother, yet you have never given birth, we are all your children. Please watch over us all as we travel on the Tour, facing dangers we expected and some we did not. Bring Kat safely home so she may rule wisely for many years to come. I honour you now and always. Blessed Be.
He stayed kneeling in one final moment of reverence before he opened his eyes, made one of the accepted signs of devotion, and got to his feet. He turned to find Riku behind him, looking abashed.
"I didn't mean to intrude on your private worship, your Grace."
Honor noted the use of his title and shook his head reassuringly. "If I did not wish to be seen to be devout I would not pray in public. What is it?"
"There's a problem with the stable master. He says we owe him more coin."
Oh does he? Honor sighed. "I'll come and deal with it."
"I wouldn't have interrupted," Riku began but Honor waved the explanation away. He was used to it by now. There would be time for rest in the afterlife, many said. When that time came he'd have earned every moment of it.

Tiny thing: Blessed Mother, yet you have never given birth, should it be 'though you have never given birth'?

Date: 2013-04-18 07:49 pm (UTC)Hmm. I was using it for the secondary/tertiary meaning of "nevertheless" and I just double-checked that "yet" is a synonym for "though". I was going for a more "old"/arcane/ceremonial tone. Originally the phrase was the other way round (Blessed Mother, we are all your children, yet you have never given birth) but I thought it stronger this way, while it may have muddled the meaning a bit. I'll think about it some more, thank you :D

I love this so freaking much!! :D *FLAILS HARD*

LOL, I guess so! :D
I love how something divine and sacred gets interrupted with something earthly and mundane. How the two parts of the story balance each other. Great job! :D
Awesome piece, bb! :D

Date: 2013-06-21 03:55 pm (UTC)You sometimes see this in paganism, where the dark is seen as necessary to complement the light, but not in mainstream religions where the duality is disallowed: us/them, good/bad.
So the Lady is an embodiment of both healer and warrior, a mother who has never birthed (also allowing for non-biological parenting to be recognised). It's my attempt to show Her many qualities :)
I'm glad you see it that way; I needed a place to finish the fic and this is such a part of Honor's life. His duties are always interrupting his personal life!
