In the episode "Reckoning" Richard attempts to combine the Boxes of Orden with the power of Confession to defeat Darken Rahl once and for all. However Rahl and his Mord'Sith, led by Cara, show up. Zedd's wizard fire spell is deflected, killing him, and Cara's Agiel added to the Orden-Confession mix when she attacks Richard has a devastating effect.

Kahlan finds herself alone with Rahl and in desperation makes a terrible deal to keep herself alive – so long as a Confessor lives, the magic might be reversed. She weds Rahl and promises to bear him a son.

Meanwhile Richard and Cara find themselves flung into a post apocalyptic future. They finally realise the truth; everyone they love is dead, all of the Mord'Sith, and Richard's beloved Kahlan. Making a truce, the enemies cuddle for warmth. They're the only people from their time, who know what they've lost; Cara tries to seduce Richard but he only wants Kahlan and will return to her at any cost.

Richard hunts down Nathan Rahl, Kahlan and Darken's son, for he brought about this dystopia and is the last Confessor. Richard and Cara once again combine the magic that sent them here, and they are sent back home.

Rahl is killed in the ensuing battle, Cara leads the Mord'Sith in a retreat, and Richard is reunited with Zedd, and with Kahlan, who loved him across time.
