One of the things that makes me love Whedon's work, and which makes it so accessible and relevant, is that he is drawing on well known archetypes. This essay looks at the movie "Serenity" and how it relates to the heroic journey.

Summary: Inara tells the crew the story of "Tristan and Isolde", complete with the crew as the characters and constant interruptions.
Author notes:
(1) This would work so much better onscreen…as Inara tells the story, it should play out with the crew as the characters in the story. Hopefully I've made it clear who is playing who.
(2) There are many variations on the story of "Tristan and Isolde" and I've taken further liberties with the story for my own purposes so it doesn't exactly match any of the "official" versions.
