Poem: Uprising
Title: Uprising
Fandom: Original
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 201
Prompt: For the
writerverse Alphabetical/Music&Lyrics challenge. U for "Uprising" by Muse
Summary: A call to revolution is captivating, but if we follow it, we should be sure we'll be better off.
Warnings: None
Notes: A poem using an enclosed rhyme scheme. I love this song and have seen it used in fanvids where our rebel heroes are fighting against powerful (even alien) oppressors. However I'm playing Devil's Advocate here, wondering if, when people want to displace their corrupt and disappointing governments, they know what they're going to do afterwards. Who makes sure there's still food on the shelves and that the rubbish gets collected and that the sick get treated? How do you make sure you don't exchange an elected tyrant for unelected petty dictators?
Uprising
Revolution in the air
Oppression has gone on too long
Now the leader sings his song
Tells us how it's so unfair
Stirs up unrest with his speeches
Says that we can all be freed
As long as some are willing to bleed
On and on the rebel preaches
Free from what is not so clear
Unfettered is a powerful phrase
For who wants to be in chains?
Thus he plays upon our fear
To stop corruption and find what's true
This is indeed a fine ambition
Yet I doubt his altruism
Wonder if he's thought this through
What will replace the flawed regime?
For with no law there's only chaos
The powerful the only players
That's no better than the current scheme
Yes, rise up, and take the reins
But not without a plan for when
You'll care for all the people then
That's what leadership entails
And if he will not so preside
He should not sound his clarion call
People work together best of all
When someone steers, guides, and decides
If rebellion brings peace not endless war
Gives us a leader who truly serves
Who puts the people's interests first
Now that's a thing worth fighting for.

The poem is a great balancing piece for the song - it feels like you've set up a real dialogue here :)

I was thinking about Pratchett and how Vimes's ancestor killed a tyrant king but was hated for it. I can't find the exact quote but there's a similar sentiment here by Vetinari 'They think they want good government and justice for all, Vimes, yet what is it they really crave, deep in their hearts? Only that things go on as normal and tomorrow is pretty much like today.'
Thank you :D
